If you could find a gown actually, that would be brilliant. I have documentation for petticoats. And it doesn't even have to be red, just any color. You don't have to look, I was just wondering if you had come across anything like that and if you haven't to keep your eyes open for it. hahah Thank you so much though! =D

I don’t think I ever paid attention the the hems, but I’ll look!

Hi, I'm a French and Indian War and Rev War reenactor and I'm currently putting the finishing touches on a wool robe a'langlais. Ideally I want to bind the hem of the gown with red wool tape like women did with petticoats sometimes but I haven't found documentation for it yet. I was wondering if you had come across any documentation for something like that, and if you haven't do you mind keeping your eyes peeled?

okay soooo you want me to see if I can find a dress/petticoat of that era hemmed with red?  It might take me a little while, but I’ll see what I can do.  Stuff in museums tends to be upper-class couture rather than every day wear.

Orientalism in Fashion

Orientalism is the influence and adaptation of Middle-Eastern, Indian, and Asian aesthetic into western art, music, literature, and design.  Western sociey has always had a fascination of the unknown and the exotic, and orientalism is the romanticization of that.  For as long as the west has traded goods with the east, Orientalism has manifested itself in western fashion, although it has gone in and out of style like anything else.
