Spencer Jackets

“Spencers” were popular outerwear of the early 19th century.  The short jackets were worn for extra warmth with the fine, gauzy fabrics that were the fashion of the day.  Named after the Earl of Spencer, the garment originally began in the late 18th century as a men’s garment, but its practicality soon turned it into a popular woman’s item, often worn with a matching underskirt.
